Best Vegan Winter Destinations 2026-27: 18 Cities for Snow, Sun and Serious Food

Winter travel splits people into two camps. One wants snow on the roofs, a sauna at -10 °C and four hours of blue daylight. The other wants to leave winter behind and eat outside in January. This guide covers both. Every city was picked from live PlantsPack numbers, the fully vegan places actually there, and what it is like between December and February.

Two things upfront. This is research plus our own data, not a trip report; I have not eaten through all nineteen cities in winter. And there are no Christmas markets here on purpose. That is a separate piece, coming next. At the end you will find fully vegan places to stay, from a ski hotel in the Dolomites to a forest lodge on South Africa's Garden Route.

At a glance

Counts are live from PlantsPack as of 19 October 2026, excluding places we have archived as closed or duplicate. "Listed" is every vegan or vegan-friendly place we have for the city. "Fully vegan" is only places labelled 100% vegan that we have also cross-referenced against another vegan-first source. Low numbers are not always bad: Reykjavik has 19 listings because Reykjavik has 140,000 people.

City Listed Fully vegan Winter mode Go for
Helsinki 163 11 Deep cold Sauna + sea-ice swimming

Snow and sauna

Daylight in Helsinki and Stockholm in late December is about six hours. In Reykjavik it is closer to four. In return you get snow-quiet cities and some of the most vegan-friendly food cultures in Europe.

Helsinki, Finland

January averages around -4 °C and the sea often freezes. Finns respond by going swimming: the waterfront saunas, Löyly and Allas Sea Pool among them, cut a hole in the ice or keep a seawater pool open all winter. It is the best thing to do in the city between December and March.

Oat milk is standard in most cafés and the fully vegan restaurants skew Southeast Asian, which suits a cold night. Magu is the one to book for dinner, and the Suomenlinna ferry runs all year.

Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm sits on fourteen islands, and in a cold winter the water between some of them freezes. Gamla Stan's ochre and rust buildings look better under snow than in any other season, and the free rink at Kungsträdgården is a few minutes' walk away.

This is the city for one serious dinner. ÖUR is a fully vegan Nordic restaurant in Gamla Stan built around the food of Norrland: forest, roots, fermentation and smoke. The Mahalo cafés cover lunch, and Kafé Plattan is the central no-fuss stop.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik harbour in winter, Mount Esja behind

The smallest city here, with 19 listings, and the only one where winter is the point. The northern lights season runs roughly September to early April, and the long nights of December and January give the best odds. Temperatures hover near freezing, but the wind means packing for -10 °C. Every neighbourhood has a geothermal pool, and they stay open in snow.

Mama on Bankastræti is the local vegan living room, and Loving Hut covers fast and warm. Four fully vegan venues is not a scene. In a city this size, it is enough.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen winters are grey, wet and around 2 °C, so the city makes the indoors very good: candles in every window, blankets on terrace chairs, a winter-swimming culture at the harbour baths, and the Copenhagen Light Festival on the canals through February.

The reason it is on a vegan list is fine dining. Ark was the first vegan restaurant in the Nordics to earn a Michelin Green Star. Bistro Lupa in Østerbro holds a Green Star and a Bib Gourmand, Michelin's way of saying the prices are fair. Beyla, from Ark's group, is the brunch sibling. Book weeks ahead.

Montreal, Canada

Two metres of snow a year and a January average of -10 °C, and nobody hides. Igloofest, an outdoor electronic festival on the Old Port, is scheduled for 14 January to 6 February 2027 (dates still to be confirmed), and people dance in snowsuits. Too cold? The RÉSO underground city links metro, malls and towers across 30 km.

Montreal is the second-largest vegan scene here by our count and the one with the best bakeries. Chai-Yo on Saint-Denis does Thai and Chinese comfort food, the right genre at -15 °C. Copper Branch, the plant-based chain that started here, has a branch inside the underground at Complexe Desjardins.

Old Europe

Cold, occasionally snowy, and at their least crowded between early January and late February. Hotel prices drop, museums empty, and the vegan scenes are dense enough that you never plan a day around one restaurant.

Vienna, Austria

Schönbrunn Palace in winter

The biggest vegan city on this list by a wide margin: 670 listed places and 56 cross-referenced fully vegan venues. Ball season runs through January and February, several hundred balls in all, from the Philharmonic Ball on 21 January 2027 to the Opera Ball on 4 February. No ticket needed: floor-length gowns stepping over snow on the Ringstrasse is its own event. The UNESCO-listed coffee houses now stock oat milk without comment.

Swing Kitchen started here and calls itself the world's first fully vegan burger chain. Vevi does Vietnamese in the 7th district, Neubau, which is where to base yourself if eating is the point. Couch Potato is a fully vegan cocktail bar.

Budapest, Hungary

The thermal baths are the known winter move, and they hold up: Széchenyi's outdoor pools stay open all winter at around 38 °C, steam rising off them on snowy days. The less obvious Budapest winter is the City Park Ice Rink, Városligeti Műjégpálya, in front of Vajdahunyad Castle: in use since 1870, one of the largest outdoor rinks in Europe, and at its best on a weekday evening with the castle lit behind you. The ruin bars of the 7th district are the other half, built for cold weather with courtyards under heaters and rooms full of mismatched furniture. Temperatures sit around 0 °C and the Danube occasionally carries ice.

The vegan scene is the cheapest in this section and leans into comfort food: Vegan Love for burgers and hot dogs, Vegazzi for plant-based Neapolitan pizza, and ÉdesAnya for Hungarian cakes without the dairy.

Prague, Czech Republic

Charles Bridge under snow

Prague in summer is a crowd. Prague at seven on a January morning is you, the statues on Charles Bridge, and whoever else got up. Temperatures sit between -3 °C and 2 °C, and Petřín hill becomes a sledging slope when the snow stays.

The fully vegan scene is dense for the city's size, partly thanks to the Loving Hut and Loving Bistro branches. The one with a point of view is Střecha, in the New Town, which employs people who have experienced homelessness or served a prison sentence. Eaternia in Smíchov is the fallback across the river.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Not that cold, around 4 °C, but wet, windy off the North Sea, and dark before four. Two winter events make up for it. Hogmanay runs 29 December to 1 January: a torchlight procession through the Old Town, a street party on the 31st and fireworks over the castle at midnight. Then Burns Night on 25 January, when pubs across the city serve haggis, and a vegan one is now common enough that many list it.

Holy Cow on Elder Street, near Waverley, is the long-running fully vegan café. Sora Diana is the dinner pick in the south side. Considerit does vegan chocolate and doughnuts.

Ski and city

Ski towns are usually a problem for vegans: one soup and three cheese dishes in a mountain hut. These three put serious skiing within an hour of a real city, so you ski by day and eat properly at night.

Innsbruck, Austria

Innsbruck and the Nordkette from the Bergisel ski jump

The only city in the Alps where a funicular leaves from next to the old town and puts you on a slope at 1,900 metres about twenty minutes later. The Hungerburgbahn starts at Congress, by the river, and links to the Nordkette cable cars. The Hafelekar run is one of the steepest in Austria;

We list 41 places and four fully vegan ones, a small but good scene for a town of 130,000. Olive is the one to build an evening around, with Austrian-inspired seitan goulash and pumpkin ravioli by its own description. Cafe Naiv is the daytime café.

Zurich rarely holds snow, but it is the gateway: Flumserberg, Engelberg and Hoch-Ybrig are each about an hour by train, no car needed.

The reason to end a ski day here is dinner. KLE, in Wiedikon, is a fully vegan fine-dining restaurant run by chef Zineb Hattab. It earned a Michelin Green Star in 2021 and a full star in 2022, the first vegan restaurant in Switzerland to do so. For the rest of the trip, Bakery Bakery is the country's first fully vegan bakery, open since 2019.

Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

Utah trademarks "The Greatest Snow on Earth", and the dry Wasatch powder is why the city will host the 2034 Winter Olympics.

The vegan scene surprises people: 21 fully vegan places by our count. Zest Kitchen & Bar downtown is all-vegan and gluten-free, Santo Taco is the Mexican option, and Alchemy Coffee is a fully vegan coffee shop for the early canyon run.

Winter sun

For the second camp, on four continents. Cape Town, Melbourne and Buenos Aires are in full southern summer, Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Mexico City are in their dry seasons, and Lisbon is mild rather than hot.

Of 91 listed places, 30 are fully vegan and cross-referenced, a ratio only Mexico City beats in this guide, and Portugal is one of the countries we hand-verified in 2026. A Minha Avó, "my grandmother", does fully vegan Portuguese cooking. Scoop 'n Dough does ice cream and doughnuts in Marvila, where the breweries and galleries have gone.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

November to February is the cool season: afternoons in the high twenties, mornings down to 13 °C, clear skies, and views from Doi Suthep instead of haze. Timing matters, because the agricultural burning season starts mid-to-late February and pushes air quality into dangerous territory. Go in December or January.

Thailand's "jay" vegetarian tradition is strict about animal products, which is why Chiang Mai has had a vegan reputation for years. Goodsouls Kitchen does the big Thai menu well, Reform Kafé is the garden-courtyard option, and May Kaidee's runs a vegan cooking school.

At 2,240 metres, winter here is the dry season: almost no rain from November to April, 6 °C mornings and 22 °C afternoons under a hard blue sky. We covered the city in our summer Americas guide; the case is stronger in winter, and Mexican food veganises naturally: beans, corn, nopales, salsas, chiles.

Gracias Madre in Juárez is vegan Mexican with a California accent. Plantasia in Roma Norte does fully vegan Thai, Indian and Korean. Miga Vegana is the vegan bakery for conchas and croissants.

"Winter" is the wrong word. December to February is high summer: 26 °C days, sunset after eight, beaches on both sides of the peninsula and the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts on Sunday evenings. December is also South Africa's own holiday season, so January and February are the better months.

Our Cape Town data is thinner, 35 listed places and five fully vegan ones cross-referenced. The Conscious Kitchen on Kloof Street is a plant-based café and juice bar on the city's best food street; Vegan Streetfood does burgers, wraps and hot dogs.

December to February is summer: highs around 26 °C with the occasional 38 °C day, long light evenings and the Australian Open in late January. Fitzroy, Collingwood and Brunswick are the vegan streets.

Smith & Daughters on Brunswick Street is chef Shannon Martinez's hatted plant-based restaurant, with Smith & Deli around the corner in Collingwood. Mister Nice Guy's is the fully vegan bakeshop, and Lord of the Fries, the vegan burger chain, started here.

Where to stay

A vegan dinner in town is one thing. Waking up somewhere you can also eat breakfast without asking questions is better. These six stays are fully vegan by their own description and by at least one outside source we checked on 22 October 2026. Four are in the mountains, two are in the sun, and a seventh sits in the Chiang Mai section. Winter dates change every year, so check with the host before you book.

In the mountains

Paradiso Pure.Living, Alpe di Siusi, Dolomites, Italy. A vegan hotel at 2,020 metres on the Seiser Alm, inside the Dolomiti Superski area, so you ski from the door. In winter you cannot drive up: a shuttle runs from the car park in Compatsch, and check-in is between 15:00 and 19:00. The hotel also runs OMNIA, a small plant-based fine-dining restaurant with chef Aggeliki Charami. Winter season is roughly December to April.

Naturhaus Lehnwieser, Ramsau am Dachstein, Austria. The regional tourism office describes it as a guesthouse run exclusively vegan, organic and wholefood. Ramsau is a cross-country skiing village under the Dachstein glacier, with the downhill slopes of Schladming nearby. Small and simple, with a self-service cellar for drinks and a little organic shop.

Orestes Hütte, Gressoney-La-Trinité, Aosta Valley, Italy. A vegan mountain hut at about 2,600 metres on Monte Rosa. In winter you take the gondola from Staffal to Gabiet and walk the last stretch on snowshoes or touring skis, about an hour. It opens with the lifts, listed by the regional tourism site as 22 December to 25 April, and it has rooms if you want to stay up there.

For Thailand, the fully vegan Away Chiang Mai Thapae Resort is in the Chiang Mai section above.

Methodology

Every number is a live query against the PlantsPack directory on 19 October 2026, inside each city as we store it, excluding archived places. "Listed" includes every tier of our four-level vegan scale. "Fully vegan" is stricter: labelled 100% vegan and cross-referenced against at least one other vegan-first source. It is not a claim that a person has checked every one. Each place card links to a page with the venue's own website, its label history and a report button. The stays were checked one by one against their own websites, regional tourism pages and the Michelin Guide on 22 October 2026.

Left out: Christmas markets (next article), Valencia and Sapporo (cut for length), resorts with no city attached (Zermatt, Whistler and Banff each have fewer than five listings with us), and Tromsø, which has the best northern lights in Europe and three listings, which is not enough to send anyone there on a food promise.

Where I'd go

One winter week, no constraints: Vienna, for the scene, the cold-weather city and the ball season. For snow, Montreal, because it leans into winter instead of enduring it. For sun, Lisbon, because the numbers and the light both hold up.

Been to any of these in winter? If the data looks wrong, use the report link on the place page.
